Every year I say I'm going to shop at the local farmers markets during the season instead of the grocery stores and every year I hit 1, maybe 2, before it's all over! This year I've already gone a few times and the fruits and veggies are only getting better as the summer continues!

And that's not all you can find at these colorful, mouthwatering events! There's baked good, tasty dog treats, organic soaps and lotions, jewelry, popcorn, cotton candy, booths just for kids with face painting and games, gourmet coffee and ice teas to go, and more!

This year, my goal is to freeze quarts and quarts of tomatoes--all cut up and ready to go for the various dishes we love. Ultimately, the real goal is to buy as few tasteless tomatoes as possible over the winter and through spring. I've started freezing cut fresh fruit (think smoothies!), other veggies, and herbs for cooking also. It saves money over the long haul, but even if it's a zero-sum effort, the time you save in food prep and trips you don't have to make to the store [again] is worth it! I did this religiously a couple of years ago, and cooking was almost fun because I had everything I needed at home for quite a few months. Ok, it was a little fun!
